No longer loveable?

Harold Russel, real life double hand amputee, plays a WWII Veteran returning to his beloved. He sees himself as defective and no longer loveable. Yet, where he sees shame, she sees noble sacrifice and tremendous courage.

Many trauma survivors come to their therapists ashamed of what they've experienced and the methods they've used to cope, and yet their therapists experience compassion and inspiration.

In both cases, it is the unconditional acceptance of the compassionate other that transforms the experience of shame into that of worthiness and connection.
